A report about the smartphone sector has been published

On the last day of February, the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights published a report which assessed the economic impact of intellectual property infringements in the smartphone sector.

The report, which was composed in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union, shows that in 2015, an estimate of 184 million fewer smartphones were sold by the legitimate industry because of the availability of counterfeit smartphones on the market. Accordingly, about 45.3 billion EUR were lost due to the aforementioned, which make up 12.9% of legitimate sales.

The report also depicts that in 2015, a total of 1.3 billion smartphones were sold, meaning that 1 in every 6 people bought a new phone. The average cost of the smartphone was 275 EUR.
